On early spring mornings, winter leaves the marshes of New England in spiraling clouds of fog that lift from the landscape, unveiling the the promise of spring and revealing the marshes' welcoming anticipation of the new life and old friends that will soon return.
This painting is of a recollection of a marsh exploration I had in early spring. On a February day, I went looking for signs of life in the wetlands after the snow left, I could explore the depths of the area because I could "walk on water" where it was frozen! Parting the curtain of reeds, I was given a glimpse into the world of the waiting marsh. The colors were a brilliant display of welcome for the ducks and geese and other waterfowl that were yet to arrive. In the stillness, I soaked in the scenery, serenaded by the winter songbirds, but silent of the toads and birds yet to arrive.
